It’s Humpday, man.

Today, for no particular reason, I’m gonna kick today’s post off with this video that makes me laugh nine out of ten times when I watch it.

I don’t laugh the tenth time because I’ve watched it nine times already.
Anyway, with summer popping almost all over the place right now, (with the exception of Minneapolis West);
portlandsweathersucks.jpg
-mountain bike race notifications are starting to take their place in my inbox, as well on websites and forums across the land.
It just so happens that Greg from Bike Monkey Magazine also has some goods going on in that regard up in the North Bay, which he expounds upon here;
“SK,
I know you must get these requests by the truckload, so apologies for being “that guy.” Our Annadel XC MTB race is not getting the registrations we’d like; we’ve been spoiled by being able to say the words “sold out” at our event. We’re packaging much radness here, distilled with pointy bullets for easing of attention spans:
–first MTB race in Annadel State Park in nearly 25 years (it took us 3 years to get this wrangled–Rockhoppers were the last races here.)
kimshusbandcrushingannandale.jpg
(Editor’s note- Name the handsome young man, and win some street cred.)
–downtown Santa Rosa start with closed neutral route through town
–14, 19, and 27 mile closed singletrack courses
–cash prizes for pro and singlespeeders, 10 deep!
–June 5th
–Expo at the finish line
–lunch and beer included in registration
–Reaching out to old schoolers to attend; so far Tom Ritchey, Scot Nicol, Otis Guy are confirmed; Gary Fisher, Joe Murray, Joe Breeze, Ross Shafer, Stevil Kinevil, etc. have expressed strong interest, but not confirmed
–Everyone who raced back in the day gets a free spot to race again and some Rogaine
–Fundraiser for our nuked State Parks
That last one is the big draw, we hope, and the one that makes me feel okay in asking you to help us get the word out on this one. Link’s over here.
Obviously, for this fine service, we’ll write your name in our magic race book and see that you don’t pay a dime for the chance to get silly in Sonoma.
Best and thanks in advance for any help you see fit to render–hope you’re well,
gf”

So there you have it. A mountain bike styled competitive athletic pursuit in a place that has seen no such activity in almost three decades. Not that I have to tell anyone from the area this, but to folks outside of the region who might be entertaining the idea of coming out for it, Annadel State Park is just about one of the most lovely locations one could choose in which to ride a bicycle, and with such a wide array of geographic variations and trail types, the Bike Monkey crew is sure to put together a course for the ages.
Perhaps you would like to attend this bicycle race, but can’t because you have nothing to wear. Luckily Robert from Bunnyhawk can get you covered;
“Yo Stevil,
Our scrappy little “team” has some kits for sale via the interwebs and I was hoping for a shout out. We really need the beer money and want to spread the beautiful ugly across this great land. Any help would be rad.

Soft Like Kitten.
Love you snuggle puss,
Roberto”

Tis always the season for new kits.
In news of thing far more urbanish, recently while perusing The Gothamist, (specifically I was reading the article about the NYPD stooping to a new low), I came across this article about NYC’s bike crackdown, though I was particularly interested in the accompanying video about the relatively controversial (but not controversial in comparison to say, waterboarding) ‘Idaho Stop’;

I have used this fact in my defense for being popped for a rolling stop, saying simply that it’s curious the Idaho Stop would be ok for a tiny burgh like Boise, but far too dangerous for a megalopolis like Santa Cruz. So far I’ve been let go with a warning, which still costs less than any ticket I might have been issued.
Finally, and what with the lightening speed that the interwebs operate, this news has been hashed and rehashed, but in the Giro D’italia’s third stage on Monday, Belgian Wouter Weylandt crashed and suffered fatal injuries. Certainly I can’t honor this tragedy as The Bike Snob has, but for my part, to Wouter’s friends and family, should anyone of them happen to read this site, I offer my most sincere condolences.
RIPWouter Weylandt.jpg
May all of our next rides be in his name.

    Jose Mumphrey, aka Joe Murphy, aka Joe Murray, aka Kim’s husband is the old man of which is shown above.
    Do I have street cred, and what shall I do with it?

    That would be the second most famous person in flagstaff. First would be Dan Diaz, of course

    That video went from 200k to 2million views in like a day, because of the whole 9/10 thing I presume. Joe Murray? How about Joaquin Phoenix? That guy can rhyme. But on a serious note, reading the AHTBM blog lately has been like this… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qah3Q9BnRHM
    Just kidding.

    And he’s riding an ’86 Teesdale-built Fisher Competition with Suntour ratchet shifters; Suntour XC roller cam levers; WTB modified Magura grips; a Breeze & Angle Race Hite; and an Avocet cyclecomputer. How’s that for street cred?
