Huffing glue is an art unto itself.

Hello there, and a very good day to you.

So before we begin, allow me to offer you just a smidgen of backstory.

Because everything here seems to involve some kind of backstory.

A couple months ago I got a wild hair to build a model car. The reasoning behind it was simply that I felt due to the abundance of time I spend online, and on a computer in general, my attention span had taken a fairly serious hit. I was no longer able spend six or eight hours in my studio on a painting because my mind was too occupied on this email, or that cat video, or whatever.

In response to this realization I bought myself a Batmobile model, and on my desk it sat.

It wasn’t until this past Christmas when Demonika presented me with a lovely 1966 Nova that I was then inspired to head to the hobby shop and buy the paints I would need to complete my masterpiece. This opened the door to several more builds that followed, including this murdered out 1971 Challenger, which I think is pretty tough;

-plus a conversation with Soulcraft Sean and Loudass during which time the gauntlet was thrown and Loudass issued a challenge.

In turn, I extended it to this here readership and anybody else who wanted to partake;

Ultimately the exercise did the trick for me. It narrowed my aperture a bit and in the time since I’ve finished a couple of paintings that I might not have been able to otherwise.

There were a huge number of other people who I caught wind were submitting pieces as well, but they mostly have all vanished into the ether.

Apparently timeless glory was just too much for them.

Please note that some of the images have detail links below them, (plus I have an album of additional shots). Also please note that in an attempt at keeping entrants relatively anonymous, I’ve just used initials with the correlating images. This also means that I will probably lose track of how to contact the winner, so if by chance your submission emerges victorious, and you don’t hear from me, this is why.

There is only one vote allowed per entry so don’t squander yours.

So without further ado, in no particular order I present to you at least partial fruits of the last five weeks worth of labor;

You get the idea of who among us maybe got their shoe laces snagged on the starting blocks, or maybe never even got out of the locker room to begin with.

As for the rest of them, there you have it.

The Great AHTBM Model Building Nerd Off number one is in the books.

Because this post and the contents therein took a real damned long time to complete, I’m gonna let it run through Friday the 19th, and we’ll circle back around to celebrate the winner on Monday.

Like huffing glue, voting is a responsibility that our forefathers died to ensure would be an unwavering right. Exercise your role in the democratic process.

And may the best nerd win.

  2. Benitosbro February 17, 2016 at 5:50 am #

Man, those water applied decals still give me fucking nightmares.

  3. doubt February 17, 2016 at 6:10 am #

I am going to trust Larry over the Van Halen dude to plow my driveway any day

      Thanks…but its Lemmy!

These are fucking awesome!!! I can’t pick a winner.

    • Surlyphil February 17, 2016 at 8:44 am #

      Then pick #21….

I was gonna go for the fire truck or the Blue Collar ragtop, but in the end the “Calvin pissing” detail won out for #11. By the way, I’ve always wanted to do a Calvin Pissing on Calvin Praying sticker, but haven’t got around to it. I encourage anyone and everyone to do it.

  7. Ghostshipmatt February 17, 2016 at 10:16 am #

So many good entries! Diggin’ #11 the most I think…Killer work.

  8. pedalman February 17, 2016 at 11:48 am #

Couldn’t help but check the vote count at lunchbreak. Sigh, this is could be even worse than the cub scout pine wood derby humiliation.

As one of the builders I need to say thank you Stevil for putting together this absurd and awesome competition. I am impressed by everyone’s efforts, but especially so of the VW bus and the beat up Chevy, seriously good work! I hope this becomes an annual thing, kind of a yin to the WSOTU yang. Either way if it’s a one-off or repeat, thanks again for finding yet another common bond between all of us other than bikes, tennis balls, low-brow humour, and music.

Some serious work was done here, gonna have to step my ‘game’ for the next time! Hats off to everyone, but especially Sycip’s micro bus!

Not my best work, or photo!

Well done! You should consider doing this contest more often.

It’s sort of a no-brainer I should vote for the split window van, but DUDE! I voted for #7! And I’m shocked — SHOCKED — that I’m the only one. Hello?

    • scotty paz February 17, 2016 at 5:01 pm #

to Caroline as # 7’s builder so am i, thank you Lady!!! and a big thanks out to Steve for his time and energy putting this together. it was so much fun to go back in time to my youth. SP

  14. Dirtysteve February 18, 2016 at 2:28 pm #

Shitballs, so many to pick from I am going to give it a day or two before I vote- Like a good sliver one will push its way thru the skin….

  15. Kanye's Mom February 18, 2016 at 3:42 pm #

It was a toss up between #5 and #11, which clearly won out for me. Dammit, I’m so predictable.

… Luckily, so is everyone else.

  16. Mike T. February 18, 2016 at 8:49 pm #

All great entries here, but #13 makes me feel like after the alimony and house payment and coors, he’s got this car and it’s going to be awesome once he gets around to painting it, but it’s been, like, 8 years since he said that…

  17. M February 18, 2016 at 11:15 pm #

    I’m calling fowl on the “single entry” …cleary #11, # 13 and #1 were done by (a) talent(ed) person(s)…oh wait, the (s) is out of context…

super cool…almost motivates me enough to finish my nearly two-years-in-the box Ferrari F1 car that I bought for precisely the same reason!

    • Stevil February 19, 2016 at 4:13 am #

Nope. Three different people, all art school dropouts.

      • Dirtysteve February 19, 2016 at 10:50 am #

What is the difference between being an art school grad and a dropout?

        • Stevil February 19, 2016 at 5:40 pm #

A dropout means you don’t have a degree. A grad means you have one, and you also know the difference between a dropout and a grad.

  18. Z February 19, 2016 at 10:14 am #

Some of those look like hot wheels rather than models…

  19. JohnL February 19, 2016 at 11:37 am #

Some really good talent here, but I had to go with the Larry (Lemmy) truck. Pure awesomeness. If I owned that IRL I would plow snow from the street INTO people’s driveways. (Larry’s kind of a dick.)
