Quotes that are quotable.

Well, would you fancy that? Here we are on Friday again.

Today is just like last Friday, or the one before that, or even the one before that, with the exception that now, as opposed to three weeks ago, we’re all that much closer to death.

With that being said, let’s get on with matters at hand.

Of course like usual, matters at hand are things that not only don’t matter, but have absolutely no consequence. Like for example, the following image which inspires, delights and generally terrifies;

Then, at some point I got an email from a person named Gina, which I ignored as I do any communication from anyone with the title ‘Marketing and Communications Coordinator’, but then she emailed me back.

I felt like I was trapped in her tractor beam. Her siren’s song was too powerful to ignore, so here we are with the email in its entirety;

Hi Stevil –

We are excited to announce that Trek Bicycle Corporation President, John Burke, will be the keynote speaker at The Executives’ Club of Chicago Global Leaders Luncheon.

On February 26, Burke will speak to more than 400 c-level executives on the profound economic, environmental, and health implications bicycles have on our planet. Burke will also share how Trek is transforming the health and quality of life for Trek employees through its unique approach to wellness.

We thought this would be an interesting event for you to share with your readers.

Talk soon!

Best,
-Gina

I guess what compelled me about this was not the hugely reasonable $129.00 cover charge for non-members, but rather that the boss-man of a world renowned bicycle company was engaging in a high profile discussion about the socioeconomic, environmental, and personal impact the public at large can benefit from the riding of the bicycle.

Unlike other companies I won’t mention whose leadership is actively engaged in consistent litigation regarding who has the copyright to the circle, or suing mom and pops for the use of vowels in their business name.

I see this as a very positive step, and would be proud to be in attendance were it not for the cover charge, and the flight to Chicago in February and what not. Though that’s just me. I certainly encourage any and all who are interested and available to attend.

Just the same, I thank Gina for her contact, even if it was somewhat random, and I hope we can one day share some laughs over a gigantic margarita;

(*Editor’s note- I tried to find an image of two people sharing a giant margarita at the same time, which was very difficult, leading me to believe that never before in history had it been done.

*Editor’s note to my editor’s note- Upon discussing this phenomenon with Lucho of Cycling Inquisition, he notified me that it has at least once occurred, as proven by this image.

The strange thing is I have that exact same shirt.)

In news of ‘The Kids Are Alright’, it was just on Wednesday that I was on the final stretch of singletrack trail before arriving at my secret hideout, when I came across some young fellows on the trail. For each of the kids there was a random and varying style of bicycle scattered about the scene. One of them volunteered that there was a downed tree across the trail that they had just removed, and as I came upon them, they were clearing a few remaining branches and making it passable once again.

This did my heart good and I asked if I could snap a photo of them, to which they kindly obliged;

So some random kids on hoopty bike are out goofing off in the woods and they see some trail work that needs to be attended to, so they do it… Simple as that.

That’s more than I can say for 90% of the ‘real mountain bikers’ I’ve crossed paths with in my life. I thanked them for their time, and we went our separate ways.

And while we’re on the topic of mountain bikers- One of those who is in the employ of Bike Rumor did me an ultimate solid with a blurb about tomorrow evening’s event;

I appreciate Zach’s efforts, and whichever random commenters decide to chime in about how the show is stupid because it’s made in Taiwan, or whatever.

Moving on- Sometimes the internet is a nightmarish landscape, filled with hatred and vitriol. Sometimes it provides us with contact with long lost friends, and sometimes, it gives us a look at who we are as human beings. Wonderful snowflakes of individuality and inspiration.

The following headline that I found via Mark does just that;

If Mr. Peabody and I could get into his Wayback Machine®, I would go to Jensen Beach on October 1st, 2011 and stand in awe of this majesty.

As a matter of fact, a pilgrimage to this sacred spot might be the next best thing.

So thank you Mr. Anonymous Drunken Taco Eater. It is because of your greatness, I salute you.

And on that, you can quote me.

    That’s inspiring to hear about those kids. I remember my first foray into the trails near my house, it was magical. Despite pedaling a forty pound DBX K-mart special.

    giant margaritas are not to be shared. proof? – ask the drunken taco bell guy. he will confirm that they are for one to consume quickly in the efforts to become numb to what the hell is going on.

    comfortably dumb – gio
