What’s up, nerds?

Right out of the gate I would like to share this NPR piece I recently stumbled across about that guy named Steve Albini;

I’ve had the pleasure of loosely knowing Steve for a number of years, and I love how his mind works.

His discussing getting to meet Iggy Pop was not a far cry from when I first met Steve. To have the honor of not only meeting someone, but getting to collaborate with a person who’s been responsible for so much of your life’s creative force is truly a unique experience, and I love getting to see that my heroes have heroes in real time.

And speaking of amazing music, did you catch this past Saturday’s ‘One For The Weekend‘?

Well, fear not music lovers, because I have you covered again right here;

I was so absolutely staggered by this track that I did a medium-deep dive on the songstress herself, Ms. Lisa Gail Allred.

What I gleaned is that she lives in Texas, has a Reverb Nation page, likes sparkly things;

And when she’s not writing, recording, and shooting videos for bangers like ‘3 Second Rule’, enjoys spending time baking brown stuff;

I truly am entranced by this enigma, and will be sure to add it to my list of songs to listen to while high on mushrooms.

Which by the way, reminds me that it’s probably time to dude this gem off again;

I can’t quite put my finger on it, but something about this clip always makes me think of pizza.

In other news of finding joy in strange places, this past weekend, Erik, Craig, Joe and I all finally got organized enough to get out on a little rainy trail crawl;

Another mutual friend of ours was kinda busting our balls about it, and to them I just responded ‘do you like hanging out in the woods with your friends and drinking beer?‘ (though to be fair, on this day there was no beer drinking). Of course they said yes, but still deny that they want anything to do with small trucks.

I can’t remember if I’ve told this story before- (I likely have, because I only have like, five stories), but when I was small, I used to spends HOURS playing in the woods with my Adventure People, GI Joes, Stomper 4x4s I’d imagine I was driving, and the like. I mean, I would just vanish and get completely lost in my various little fantasies. It’s not unlike most kids, I’d assume, but my toys, and my imagination were my entire universe. Then I got into my tenth or eleventh year, discovered bikes, and my attention changed. I remember specifically lamenting the fact that my toys didn’t check all the same boxes for me that they always had. I said something to my dad, to which he explained that’s just a part of growing up, but it didn’t bum me out any less.

Fast forward to about six or seven years ago when my friend Corey showed up to Souldrun Joe and Laura’s house in Colorado with a bag of trucks, and from that point I was sold;

Eventually I bought one for myself, and one day while my pal James and I were down in this little draw navigating a small creek, I was suddenly struck with an epiphany- This is that feeling I thought I lost. Playing in the woods, and actually driving a little truck. I get to nerd out with my friends about the little bells and whistles they want to buy, and make jokes, and laugh, and find a sweet, innocent meditative peace I never imagined I’d reclaim.

Between Bellingham and Tacoma, we’re beginning to amass a regular little gang, and have two rallies coming up whenever the weather clears. This aint no boy’s club, so if there are women reading these words who might like to take part, hit me up. Likewise, while I’m certainly no expert in the field, if anyone has any, I can answer at least a few questions regarding reputable companies, or direct you to resources for good starter trucks.

Likely I’d just point you to Amain Hobbies anyway.

The world’s not a very kind place these days it seems. If we can offset any of that anxiety or sadness with simple playing, I’m 100% for it.

In fancy pants business guy news, I would like to let folks know that I finally have them WSRW t-shirts in stock again;

I also think it’s important I mention that yesterday I met two very handsome spotty-stripeys, both of whom were quite fond of the KVLT key leash;

Two out of two buddies can’t be wrong.

Finally, and in conclusion, I have the 61st episode of Revolting available for consumption right here;

You’re probably gonna like it, or maybe you’ll hate it. It’s ok either way, but if it’s the latter, it’ll be abundantly clear which one of us is a nerd.

Spread this like it's sick

    For anybody curious about the trucks who made it to comments, a couple years ago I bought a smaller scale RC truck, less money etc etc about a foot long. Super fun. Not as easily custom’d, I was ok with that…. But I’ve learned also not as easily repaired especially when you’ve saturated all the little steer joints and the motor with fine gravel from your escapades. So I may get another but if I was gonna do it I’d go for a more full-need version. It was fun as hell jumping that truck off of old infdistrial landscape stuff near the cement plant. A bigger truck would also handle the weeds and roots of north Georgia better. Just my 1 cent since I’m apparently too cheap for two.

    When I saw the title of the post, I knew that we’d be talking tiny trucks. Amen to all that was said about feeling like a kid again playing with these things. I’m approaching full-nerd having just made a couple servo winches and waiting on the spools to put winches on both of our trucks. And when I say “our” I mean both my wife’s and mine cuz yeah, the ladies love tiny trucks too.

    What scale are yall running? I’ve got a full size rock crawler but I’m constantly tempted by these.

      We’re all 1/10th, and a few 1/24th scale, but that 1/6th Honcho has my mouth watering.
