Tuesday time machine.

Tuesday time machine.

First things first, please allow me to direct you to the updated and almost complete list of Revolting Music Picks. I've been dropping the ball pretty solidly for at least a few months, and was inspired to round it out after recently watching a video of an interview with cultural critic Liz Pelly in which among other things, she discusses how streaming services intentionally strip the listeners' need to actually engage with their musical selections. (This specific point captured here)

I was inspired to respond by shouting into the void and encourage people to lean into their curiosity, and go to record stores, and pour over used bins, and talk with record store employees, and read reviews on sites or magazines, and go see bands... All of these things are good for the soul, and for the most part, supports the artists, which I think we can all agree is vitally important.

 The idea that we might lose the ability to do these things only because of the majority's unflappable commitment to 'convenience' kills me with a thousand tiny cuts.

Moving on from that to this, last week Chris hollered at Robot with a message for us both which I think resonated most loudly with me;

"Hey, Robot...

Some very good friends of mine put out a new video every year around this time, tied to a skateboarding get-together we call "Stupidfest." I thought you and Stevil would appreciate it. Very much in the vein of the old TIred videos.

Here's the link, before I forget to include it.
Neverwas, as the name would suggest is a bunch of old guys who were never good enough for the magazines or sponsorships, but who have loved skating for their entire lives.

I hope you're navigating the collapse of the empire well.
-Chris"

Firstly, 'the Old Tired videos' have only been being released for the last ten years, (to my knowledge, this being the first) but maybe Chris was referencing the fact that the original videos featured a number of people and were longer than last year's which in its entirety clocked in at seven whole minutes.

Christian Cooper and I heatedly debated the importance of videos like this. I said I liked them because there in no shortage of clips featuring absolute mind-blowing feats, but videos like the Tired series and Neverwas are inspiring to be because it features normal people hanging out at super fun looking, and rarely seen spots.

Like, for example;

Gadzooks, I could spend the rest of my life there, and to think, people live in neighboring apartments and are utterly unaware of the absolute dream zone that lies just outside their doors. Not a lot of places like this in the states, either... You're either in Colorado Springs, New Mexico, Nevada, or Texas, which I believe is where the Neverwas crew lives.

Furthermore, I think I would enjoy being friends with these folks, and in turn, I think they might enjoy hanging out with me. As we grow older, and meander through the labyrinth of existence, I think that's a rare thing to find, yet with skateboarding, it remains pretty commonplace, and for that I'm always grateful.

And while we're on the topic, I'd like to include this video that was sent by music critic to the stars, Lee St. Clair which features all kinds of never-before-seen (except by those who've seen it) behind the scenes footage from the first and (in my humble opinion) the greatest skateboard video ever made;

And while D. David Morin has camera operating and 'technical assistant' credits at the conclusion of the Video Show, can anyone confirm or deny if he plays the role of weekend morning news segment host, Bob Burbanks?;

Dude was everywhere in the '80s;

-And yet I have no idea who he is.

Moving along to the mailbag before we close the doors on today's efforts, I tale pleasure to include an email from George, who the attentive among us might remember from way back in the AHTBM days;

"Stevil-

Hey man, quit fucking yourself, seriously.

George"

I've always really appreciated George's emails for the simple reason that they are so simple. No big diatribes. Just a little encouragement and photographic evidence that a beautiful life doesn't have to be a complicated one.

And speaking of which almost entirely, that brings us to the brand newest episode of Revolting in which we mostly discuss that very topic;

And while it's on my mind, next week's is our 200th episode. Robot decided that addressing listen questions might be a fun way to spend our time, so if you have one, please send it to robot(at)cyclingindepedent(dot)com.

We will do our best to address each question with kindness, open minds, and if we have to, a little bit of time travel.

I didn’t even have to read the article on streaming music killing music, i know I can agree. Streaming is just spoon feeding you what they want. Going in search find what you want.

And since I can’t comment on Instagram I’ll leave it here.

Concussions are terrible, glad the dizziness finally dissipated, but make sure to follow Dr orders since your brain is the best part.

But even if it hurts like hell, make sure to do some deep breathing. Not doing so is what ends up causing pneumonia because you never get rid of fluid in your lungs and it builds up.

I fractured a rib as kid. Doctor said you can’t really do much other than let it heal so I’ve never bothered to go to a doctor for any of the other rib injuries through the years, which is not rare considering I have no meat to protect them. Figured if it was completely broken through it would hurt more than just a fracture which is still awful. But yeah, it sucks and takes weeks if not months to not feel like somebody stabbing you every time you breath.

Heal up quick just in time for wet and slippery season.
