What's old is newish again.

What's old is newish again.

Or if you will- 'One person's treasure is another person's trash'.

Welcome to another episode of equity wringing my hands in the corner.

First up, from Mike, we get Fangus;

Ironically (sorta, maybe), I was in the middle of watching 'Becoming Led Zeppelin' when this video came through.

As I sat and watched the documentary I reflected on how currently, everything is an amalgamation of everything that's come before it, and how maybe while GenX is the last generation to exist without the internet and all of the information about everything, everywhere, it ironically (again maybe, sorta) is also the last generation (*perhaps) to have contributed anything original to the world.

I freely recognize that this his a wildly oversimplified statement, of course. Zeppelin took from the Blues and just made it louder. Really, all rock music came from the R&B seed, and of course visual artists have borrowed from other movements for generations. All I really know much of is bikes, and art, and music, and skateboarding, and that's about it anyway.

Or it could be that as a GenXer myself, perhaps I just have a skewed perspective of what my generation and the couple generations ahead of mine have created/assembled/collaged. Yes, everything's been done. I just think anymore not so many people are doing anything terribly compelling in the wake of it all.

Really the bottom line is everything has come from everything else and I liked psychedelic rock bands from the 60s, and the flavor that Fangus is cooking still tastes real good today.

And while we're on the topic of history repeating itself, it was timely that the other day after I posted a photo of Jimmy James Newman riding his bike that I shot many years ago;

-He ended up calling me on Friday morning and told me that after months of plotting, planning, dreaming, and scheming he's finally got his little Jammer Bikes imprint going;

We'd chatted about it  months ago, but his simi-official press release gets into the details a bit more succinctly;

"Greetings Stevil,

I started Jammer Bikes because my old friend Colby, the cinematographer behind Macaframa, called me up one day and asked if I would like to go film some track bike stuff in SF, like the old times. He wanted to test a camera he was using to shoot automotive stuff, because he thought it would be a nice setup for track bikes in the city;
So we went out a couple times and once I saw the footage I thought, "We should be selling something with this." Because it looked real good. So I got to thinking about things.

Things like the van I was about to sell sitting in my driveway, video projects I have been a part of, my track bike, obscure synthwave and hip-hop, and certain friends and acquaintances that are top level at what they do. I made a few calls, and somehow through the power of greyskull, Rick Hunter decided to make a batch of track bikes for me, with my signature geometry. Just like the old times.

Brands and individuals that support Jammer:  Hunter Cycles, Mike Giant, King Kog, Enduro Bearings, Rat King Frames, Paul Components, Dannyboy Smith.

We've done a size run of 49, 52, 55, 58, and 61, but here's some photos of the untreated raw steel double nickel;
It's going to the team rider. More info on that soon.

Thanks,
James"

I like one of the comments on the above presented video that simply states 'James has put in his 10,.000 hours', which is a whole lot of truth.

You might remember James from his Mash SF days, though that whole experience is well behind him at this point.

Anyhü, if you're smelling what Jammer is cooking, give a follow to keep up on the goods.

In other news of small batch and independent manufacturing, everyone has all probably learned that Paragon Machine Works is fixing to shutter operations effective immediately;

This is so bad for so many reasons and for so many people.

Name just about any independent framebuilder, and they will be adversely affected by this. I don't know much more than what the few articles have expressed, but holy shit, the shockwaves are going to run deep. I have decades of super good memories of ding-donging around at the Paragon parties, and being welcomed into the SOPWAMTOS fold.

Losing them creates an immeasurable void that will be felt for years.

Now having covered all of that, I'll bring it home by presenting the very newest episode of Revolting;

You know the drill... Robot remembers words and uses them correctly, and I generally don't.

Just like it ever was, except this time it's new-oldishness.

RIP Paragon

I feel like this is the end of the bike industry being about fun, not just making money.

I hope Mark and Donna get time and the chance to go have lots more fun of their own.

Yafro
